Tips on Learning French, or any Language!

Posted by

In a recent conversation with my husband, he asked what I would want for a superpower. “To know all languages!” I declared (he said teleportation).  I have been learning French for years.  I’m always looking for fun ways to improve my comprehension.  Here are my top suggestions for acquiring basic communication skills quickly:

  1. I watch French films to tune my ear.  Netflix has a pretty good selection such as Un plus Une and Amélie (all time fave).  Other films I love are Le Chef, Jean de Florette, and La Tête en Friche (My Afternoons with Marguerite) You can either use english, french or no subtitles.
  2. Spotify is a great tool.  I listen to French music but also you can listen to a podcast on learning a language.  I adore female artists such as Edith Piaf and Carla Bruni.  A couple podcasts that I have found helpful are: Learn French by Podcast and Coffee Break French.
  3. Doulingo is a free app which is great for daily practice of a language.  It is fun and easy and gets you on your way quickly.  Elementary school use this as a learning tool for students.  Learning basic speaking, writing and reading is a breeze with this useful app.  Don’t be afraid to work on two languages at once!  Studies show this can increase your comprehension.
  4. Practice, practice, practice!  A lot of cities have clubs which meet to speak foreign languages in a social setting.  Join meetup.com and you may find such a group.  I also keep in touch with friends I have made in France using facetime and email to practice French with a native speaker.

Feel free to contact me with any questions or for additional information.  Bon chance!
